Flower exports have started off the new year with a new export record: total export value of flowers and plants exceeded €400 mln in January, BPNieuws reports.
An increase of 14 per cent in fresh cut flower exports was the main driver for this record, which equalled €271 mln. The export value of potted- and garden plants grew 8 per cent to an export value of €136 mln.
The export value was mainly pushed by high purchasing prices. Higher demand from Russia (+38%), Sweden (+25%), and Poland (+64%) pushed the numbers up even further. Exports to the UK showed a decline of 6 per cent, and Switzerland showed a small decline as well.
Whether the rest of 2017 will be as succesful as January is still to be seen however, as the Brexit and possible import tariffs in the United States are likely to cut back exports.
